Cannabis plants have been used for thousands of years due to their therapeutic benefits. Their potential for use in modern medicine is finally being given the attention it deserves.
Medical cannabis can be used as a treatment to alleviate symptoms in a wide range of pathologies and ailments, reduce the chances of developing certain diseases or even prevent them.
The primary purpose of medicinal cannabis use is symptom relief and improved function. Reductions in doses (if not complete cessation) of other medications should be strongly considered. Given the lack of clinical evidence of such outcomes, nevertheless, it remains the responsibility of the health professionals and the patient to work toward the achievement of mutually agreed-upon goals.
Methods of administration & Medical precautionsChemical Compounds of Medical Cannabis
Research has shown that cannabis plants produce over 700 different chemical compounds, of which the most important medically active ones are cannabinoids and terpenoids.
The therapeutic effects that medical cannabis has on humans originate primarily from the cannabinoid compounds it produces, known as phytocannabinoids.
Phytocannabinoids are found naturally in a variety of plants but appear in especially high concentrations in cannabis plants.
Terpenoids are the most common plant chemicals found in nature and they are responsible for the aroma secreted by plants. Each terpenoid has its own pharmacological effect: those found in cannabis plants may interact with the plant’s cannabinoids.
A cannabis plant’s composition of cannabinoids and terpenoids results in each plant’s unique effects.
Cannabinoids in Medical Cannabis
So far researchers have identified over 200 phytocannabinoids produced by cannabis plants. Two particular types appear to be the most promising in the treatment of human pathologies:
THC (delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol)
THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It exhibits the following properties:
- anti-inflammatory
- analgesic
- neuroprotective
- reduces intraocular pressure
- reduces spasticity
- reduces muscle tension
CBD (cannabidiol)
CBD is non-psychoactive. Research indicates that it acts in synergy with THC and as a modulator of THC’s psychoactivity. CBD exhibits the following properties:
- anti-inflammatory
- analgesic
- antioxidant protecting healthy cells against tumors
- anticonvulsant
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The human body also produces its own cannabinoids known as endocannabinoids, which are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is found in all complex animals. The ECS in the human body acts as a homeostatic regulatory mechanism for a range of functions such as:
- memory
- digestion
- motor function
- immune response and inflammation
- appetite
- pain
- blood pressure
- bone growth
- protection of neural tissues
The ECS consists of three main elements
- endocannabinoids
- endocannabinoids receptors
- enzymes that degrade the endocannabinoids
When phytocannabinoids enter the human body, they interact with the ECS : it is through this interaction that phytocannabinoids deliver their therapeutic effects.
